Car hauler insurance in Texas for wedge and stinger rigs
One loaded stinger can carry several hundred thousand dollars in vehicles, and a single scrape on the ramp can turn into a dealer claim. Car hauler insurance in Texas has to cover each car on the deck, not just the load as a whole, and that is where most new auto transporters come up short.

Per-vehicle limits versus per-load limits on auto transport cargo
Car hauler cargo is not the same as general freight cargo. Many insurers write it as vehicle cargo with two limits: one per load and one per vehicle.
Both numbers have to fit what you haul. A $250,000 load limit does not help if each car is capped at $50,000 and you are hauling a new pickup worth more than that.
Start with your priciest single vehicle and your priciest full load. A three-car wedge hauling used auction units needs less than a nine-car stinger hauling new trucks off a plant rail ramp.
Brokers often ask for at least $100,000, and exotic or classic car shippers set their own minimums. Get those numbers in writing before you book.
Many new car haulers start with a dually and a three-car wedge, booking off auto transport boards. Moving up to a Class 8 tractor and a stinger changes the cargo limit you need overnight, so call the agent before you buy the bigger rig, not after.
| Coverage | What it does for a car hauler |
|---|---|
| Auto liability | Covers injury and damage to others, and carries your FMCSA or TxDMV filing |
| Physical damage | Covers your truck and trailer after a wreck, theft, fire, or hail |
| Vehicle cargo | Covers the cars you are hauling, often with a per-vehicle and per-load limit |
| Loading and unloading | Covers damage while driving vehicles on and off the trailer, depending on the form |
| General liability | Covers claims at dealer lots and auctions that do not involve the truck on the road |
Scratches at the auction lot and damage found at delivery
Most car hauler claims are small and happen off the highway. A bumper scraped on the ramp, an underside caught on the top deck, a door dinged at a crowded dealer lot, or a scratch the customer finds at delivery that nobody noticed at pickup.
Read the exclusions closely. Many forms exclude damage from an unsecured vehicle, damage when someone other than you loads the car, damage to the underside on the ramps, or vehicles over a set value. Ask the agent how the form handles inoperable vehicles and damage found at delivery.
Photos protect you. Walk around every vehicle at pickup and delivery, photograph all four sides and the roof, and get the condition report signed.
Clear records help a real claim get paid and keep you from paying for damage that was already there. They also keep your cargo claim history clean, and that history follows you to every renewal and every new insurer you shop.
A dually and a wedge usually need an MC number
Federal rules apply when you haul vehicles across state lines for hire at 10,001 lbs or more, and a 1-ton pickup with a loaded three-car wedge usually crosses that line. You need an MC number, a BMC-91 or BMC-91X filing, a BOC-3, UCR, and at least $750,000 in liability for general freight. Texas-only operations over 26,000 lbs need a TxDMV number and $500,000 with Form E on file.
Dealers, auctions, and auto transport brokers usually require $1,000,000 in auto liability. If you lease onto an auto transport carrier, it usually handles auto liability while you are under dispatch, and you cover physical damage and non-trucking liability.
Ask whether the carrier's cargo policy covers your loads or whether you need your own. Lenders on new stingers and wedge trailers want physical damage with the lender named as loss payee.
Exotics, new units, and what else raises car hauler rates
Car hauler pricing turns on cargo values and driver history. High-value units push cargo pricing up fast, and so does a history of loading damage claims.
Where you park a loaded trailer overnight matters too, and some insurers ask about it on the application. A secure, lit lot is worth the extra stop.

Auction lanes, plant rail ramps, and hail on an open trailer
Texas is one of the largest car markets in the country, and the vehicles have to get to dealers somehow. Big auto auctions in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio move thousands of used units every week, and car haulers run them to dealer lots across the state and beyond. Auction runs mean tight timing, lots of loading and unloading, and condition reports that decide whether a scratch was yours.
Texas also builds vehicles. The General Motors plant in Arlington builds full-size SUVs, the Toyota plant in San Antonio builds pickups, and the Tesla plant near Austin along SH-130 builds cars and trucks.
Rail ramps near those plants feed vehicles to car haulers for final delivery. Those runs often carry new units with high values, so per-vehicle cargo limits matter.
The border adds cross-border vehicle traffic too. Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley see a steady flow of vehicles headed into Mexico, and used vehicle exports move through Port Houston and the Port of Galveston. Car haulers working those routes run I-35, US-59, and I-10 with loads bound for ports or crossings.
Weather is a big risk for car haulers because the cargo sits in the open. A North Texas hailstorm can damage every car on a stinger in minutes, and hail claims on vehicle cargo can be large. Some cargo forms limit or exclude weather damage, so ask how yours handles hail.
Hurricanes and flooding along the coast are a risk when vehicles are staged near Houston or Corpus Christi. West Texas wind on I-10 and I-20 can push an empty trailer and kick up debris that chips paint.
Texas also sees a high rate of vehicle theft in big metros. Parking a loaded hauler overnight in Houston or Dallas calls for a secure, lit lot. Some insurers ask on the application where you park loaded trailers.
Questions truckers ask
How much cargo insurance does a car hauler need?
Enough to cover your priciest full load and your priciest single vehicle. Many forms set both a per-load and a per-vehicle limit. A three-car wedge hauling used auction units needs less than a stinger hauling new trucks. Brokers often require at least $100,000, and high-value shippers set their own minimum.
Does car hauler cargo cover hail damage to vehicles?
It depends on the form. Some vehicle cargo forms cover weather damage, while others limit or exclude it. Because cars ride in the open, hail is a real risk on open trailers in Texas. Ask the agent to show you the weather wording and any special deductible for hail before spring storm season.
Do I need an MC number to haul cars with a pickup and wedge trailer?
If you haul for hire across state lines and your combined weight rating is 10,001 lbs or more, yes. A 1-ton pickup with a loaded three-car wedge usually crosses that line. You will also need a BOC-3, UCR, and a BMC-91 or BMC-91X filing from your insurer. Texas-only hauling under 26,000 lbs may not need a TxDMV number.
Is damage while loading a car covered?
Often, but read the wording. Many car hauler cargo forms cover damage while you load and unload, but some exclude damage when someone else loads the vehicle, or damage to the vehicle's underside on the ramps. Take photos at pickup and delivery. Clear condition reports help the claim and protect you from damage that was already there.
